The Albany and New Hartford communities are mourning the loss of Christopher John “Chris” Madden, who passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, at the age of 70. Surrounded by his beloved family, Chris died on the 40th anniversary of his father’s passing, leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, friendship, athletic excellence, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.

Chris spent his final moments with his wife of 41 years, Carleen, and their three daughters, Katharine, Elizabeth, and Sarah, whose lives were deeply shaped by his guidance, generosity, and steadfast support.

Born on August 26, 1955, in New Hartford, New York, Chris was the eldest of five children of the late Jerome K. and Joan Frank Madden. He grew up in the family’s well-known home on Genesee Street, a place remembered by relatives and friends as a welcoming gathering spot that reflected the close-knit values the Madden family cherished for generations.

A gifted athlete from an early age, Chris attended St. John the Evangelist Elementary School before graduating from New Hartford High School in 1973. There, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, earning admiration not only for his competitive spirit but also for the camaraderie and lifelong friendships he built with teammates and coaches.

His passion for basketball continued at Siena College, where he pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting while playing for the Saints. Chris served as co-captain during Siena’s first season competing at the NCAA Division I level, a milestone that remains an important chapter in the institution’s athletic history. The friendships and experiences he gained at Siena would shape both his personal and professional life for decades to come.

Following his graduation in 1977, Chris embarked on a successful 40-year executive career with Callanan Industries and Oldcastle Materials Group. Although recognized for his discipline, tireless work ethic, and leadership abilities, he often credited the talented employees he worked alongside for the company’s achievements and emphasized the importance of teamwork throughout his career.

Away from the office, Chris was known for his infectious enthusiasm and ability to bring people together. Friends often gravitated toward him because of his positive outlook and genuine interest in others. Golf became one of his greatest passions, providing countless opportunities to create lasting memories while pursuing his favorite competitions and “majors” with friends.

Despite his many accomplishments, family remained the center of Chris’s life. He treasured time spent traveling with loved ones, whether skiing in the western United States, attending sporting events, exploring destinations abroad, or enjoying frequent vacations in Florida. Those closest to him remember his enduring love, generosity, and commitment to ensuring his family always came first.

Chris is also survived by his siblings, Jerome, Andrew, Kathleen, and Stephen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will continue to cherish the memories they shared with him.

His family expressed heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Raval, Dr. Soiffer, Dr. DeAngelo, the teams at Albany Medical Center and New York Oncology Hematology, and the staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for the compassionate care and support they provided throughout his illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Siena University on Friday, June 19. Beginning at 10 a.m., family and friends are invited to gather at the Grotto for the Reception of the Body and candle lighting before proceeding to the Maloney Great Room in the Sarazen Student Union for the Mass of the Resurrection. Those unable to join the procession may gather directly at the Sarazen Student Union at 10:15 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has encouraged donations in Chris’s memory to Wicklund Warriors or Dr. Soiffer’s Research Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, continuing his legacy of supporting others and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing difficult challenges.

Christopher J. Madden will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, accomplished executive, respected athlete, loyal friend, and compassionate leader whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court or boardroom. His legacy of integrity, generosity, and love for family will continue to inspire all who knew him.
