Bill Hogan Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Bill Hogan

The Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador community, and the broader aquatics world, mourns the profound loss of Bill Hogan—a leader, mentor, teacher, and friend whose influence on the sport of swimming is both vast and enduring. Bill’s passing has left a deep void, felt not only across Newfoundland and Labrador, but nationally and internationally by countless individuals whose lives and careers were shaped by his guidance and generosity.

Bill’s contributions to swimming are difficult to overstate. He served with distinction in numerous leadership roles within Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, including President and Vice-President, and represented Newfoundland and Labrador on the national and international stage. His service extended to Swimming Canada, where he held the role of Vice-President, and to the Aquatic Federation of Canada, where he served as President. For more than two decades, Bill worked as a Master Trainer for World Aquatics, sharing his expertise with officials around the globe. He officiated at many international competitions, including several Olympic Games—experiences that stand as milestones in a lifetime dedicated to excellence in sport.

In recognition of his lifelong service, Bill was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sport Hall of Fame as a Builder—an honor that reflects not just positions held or events officiated, but the foundational role he played in strengthening and advancing the sport at every level.

Yet, despite these remarkable accomplishments, Bill never lost sight of what mattered most: people. He was a mentor in the truest sense—patient, encouraging, and generous with his time and knowledge. He believed deeply in empowering others, inviting new volunteers to step forward, and nurturing confidence and competence in officials, coaches, and athletes alike. Thousands around the world benefited from his mentorship, and many credit Bill with inspiring them to pursue leadership, officiating, and service within the sport.

The swimming community in Newfoundland and Labrador is stronger because of Bill’s vision, leadership, and decades of service. His legacy is visible in every competition run with professionalism and care, in every official who steps onto the deck prepared and confident, in every volunteer who feels welcomed and valued, and in every swimmer who benefits from the strong foundation he helped build.

Bill leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond titles and honors. It lives on in the countless lives he touched, the standards he set, and the culture of mentorship and service he championed throughout his career. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

On behalf of Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, we extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s loving wife, Janet, his children, extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, forever respected, and always remembered with gratitude and admiration.
